Empowering Students in the College SearchFinding the Right Fit
We encourage students to explore, to further develop their interests, to define their talents, and to deepen their values. Our team of experienced college counselors works closely with faculty, advisors, and coaches to ensure students are empowered to direct their own college searches. Given the tools to reach their own decisions about college, students cross the Commencement stage confident they've found a next step that best fits their unique identity. With over 3,000 four-year colleges and universities in the country, our mission is never to place students in particular colleges; it is, instead, to empower students to make educated and informed decisions based on their own value systems.
What Guides Our Work?Process Over Results
Through a structured program based on individual needs, we focus on helping students maintain a balanced perspective on the selection process. Rarely is there one and only one right school; rather, there are several schools at which a student can find what they're seeking. Underlying all that USN provides is the strong belief that the student should take responsibility for the search and the application process. Emblematic of the High School at large, we value process over results.
OUR APPROACH IS FIRMLY GROUNDED IN THESE FIVE VALUES:
Students should demonstrate a capacity for understanding others — their peers, admissions counselors, and students who do not attend USN — during this process and also acknowledge the many privileges they have at USN when applying to college.
This process can, and should, be fun. No, really. It happens. Applying to college should be the culmination of a student’s academic journey, and we should be celebrating their growth.
Every student will experience disappointment in some way during this process. Our goal is for students to learn how to process disappointment in a healthy way.
The USN college counseling office is partnering with Harpeth Hall and MBA to bring Matty Steiner, Senior Director, from Compass Education Group to Nashville. In this presentation, Matty will provide a detailed update about the landscape of standardized testing, how to approach the SAT and ACT, and tips on seeking out test prep. This event will be hosted by Harpeth Hall (not at USN!). While anyone is welcome to join, this event is designed for freshman and sophomores and their parents.
Our graduates attend an incredibly diverse array of universities: small liberal arts colleges in Maine, large research universities in California, historically Black colleges and universities, premier colleges in the Volunteer State, international universities, and everything in between. Graduates from the classes of 2021-2024 have enrolled at 159 different four-year institutions, and we are thrilled with all of the colleges represented on this map.

We are now using using Scoir to schedule rep visits. This service is free to colleges, and it allows reps to plan trips in a map view, see availability of multiple high schools at a time, create virtual visits, and sync with your personal calendars. Please create an account, and schedule a time to meet with our students in the fall.
If you can't find a time that is convenient, then you can request a visit in Scoir. In Scoir, you can sign up for an in-person visit or a remote visit based on the preference of your university.
If you would like to conduct interviews on campus, we would be happy to help you with that as well.
Parking is behind the school in 19th Avenue parking lot visitor spots near the building or in the fenced area near the playground. Please check in at the welcome desk for a guest security lanyard. The College Counseling Office is on the fourth floor in the Gordon Wing. Parking & Directions
We strongly encourage you to also visit some of our amazing public schools in the area like Pearl-Cohn High School, John Overton High School, Lawson High School, and LEAD Prep High School. Also consider reaching out to GEAR UP and YMCA Black Achievers, two local community-based organizations.
