Golf
Our golfers competed at the region championships at Franklin Bridge Golf Club. The boys, fresh off winning the district tournament, improved on their district-winning result by 33 strokes, but finished fourth, with only the top two teams qualifying for state. The girls, who were third at districts, finished in fifth place.
Some highlights from the championships include:
All five boys shot their career-low tournament rounds on a course with water hazards on about half the holes.
Jordan Brod-Glinter ’26 - who has just committed to Lake Forest College to play golf - set a USN boys' record by shooting 71. Remarkably, this did not qualify for state as an individual - he missed out on the state tournament by one stroke.
The boys' team total of 319 is our lowest tournament total since 2017.
Victor Peng ’26 had a nervy start but recovered and had a career-low nine holes on the final nine of Victor's senior season.
VolleyballThe team advanced to the region tournament for the first time since 2016. After finishing the district tournament in third place, the team traveled to Battle Ground Academy for their first round match-up in a must-win scenario. The Tigers started the match well, exchanging points with both teams and reaching double digits, although the pace was uneven. The Wildcats pulled away, and despite some great serves late from Amelia Scanlon
’27, the Tigers dropped the first set 25-19. The second set was similar to the first and with a similar result, the Wildcats took a two-set advantage, winning 25-18. USN settled their nerves and started the third set much better, holding an advantage through most of the set before BGA was able to pull away for a 25-21 victory. Congrats to our seniors Addi King
’26, Maeve Stevenson ’26, Iris Brue ’26, and Claire Ward ’26 on leading the Tigers to their best finish in the past ten seasons.
Cross CountryWith their long-awaited debut race of the season at Oakville Mounds, the top track of “Life of a USN XC Runner” today was PR!!!
On the girls' side, Madeleine ’27 led the charge from start to finish, earning a lifetime PR of 19:46, placing 3rd overall in a field of 350! Jackie ’27 and Norah ’27 sped through next with an impressive pair of nearly 1-minute PRs (21:20 & 21:53), placing just outside the top 30. Rounding out the top five were newcomers and dynamic duo seniors Sadie Mae ’26 and Lyla ’26, dropping 2 minutes and 90 seconds respectively, for huge barrier breaker time drops of 23:03 & 23:04. Adelaide and Laura earned the coveted 6/7 spots of the team, each also dropping over a minute from their previous best season races! Other gritty PR efforts were given by Kenzie ’27, Emmeline ’29, Ella ’29, and Mia ’29 - who earned the largest PR of the day, shaving off three whole minutes to break not just 30, but also 29 minutes for the first time!
The girls' team placed 7th out of 35 teams, in the highest division we’ve raced in for the last 5 years.
The varsity boys, racing up a division (or maybe two), ended up without three of the Fab Four due to injuries that we hope prove to be minor. Jack Fruin ’27, the lone member to complete the race, battled near the front of the 400-runner field, finishing in 10th in a new PR of 16:14, the fourth fastest time in USNXC history. Behind, more PRs followed, notably with James Little ’28 breaking 18 minutes for the first time and Mario Tedeschi ’26 breaking 19 for the first time. Sean Franke ’26 nearly broke 20 in his race and was our fifth and final scoring runner. The team, missing three of the top four players and running up a few divisions, finished 25th out of 50 teams.
The JV boys also ran well, led by Elliott Carlson ’29, breaking 20 minutes, and Finch Fleming ’26 and Morgan McAteer ’26 nearly breaking 20. PRs abounded - with big time drops from Abe Boehler ’29 (running in borrowed shoes far too big!), Charlie Brackett ’29, Yother Phillips ’28, Devin McAteer ’28, Bennett Paddon ’27, Marcelo Saoud ’29, Knox Followill ’29, and Rishav Reddy ’29.
The teams will get back to training, rest up over Fall Break, and return to action at the Region Championships on October 28th.
Bowling
The bowling teams have started their respective seasons. The boys' team has had some solid individual performances from Jackson Green ’26 (152 and 154) and Charlie Hall ’27 (159, 156, and 147) through the first three matches of the season, but they have struggled to put together a complete team game. The girls' team has played two matches and, despite one of their better games over the past couple of years, lost to St. Cecilia to open the season. Sandy Aban ‘29 and Jones Crumpton ‘26 have picked up multiple wins in the head-to-head matchups and helped put the Tigers over the top for an 18-9 victory over DCA. Both teams will return to action after Fall Break.
