Before kicking off the winter sports season, the Tigers closed out the fall with Middle School soccer winning the HVAC championship, High School cross country finishing as runner-up at the state championships, and several student-athletes committing to continue their athletic careers at colleges across the country. Hear the latest updates from Athletics Director Josh Scouten in our fall sports recap.

Varsity Bowling The bowling teams finished up their regular season this week with matches against Clarksville Academy (boys) and Harpeth Hall (girls). The boys looked to pick up their second win of the season and move up in the rankings, but Clarksville had one of their best games of the season. Jackson Green ‘26 led the team, picking up two wins and bowling right at his season average of 125. The girls’ team earned their second win of the season against Harpeth Hall on Thursday behind a great day from freshman Sandy Aban ‘29 with a season-high 148. The team also picked up wins from Libin Abdulle ‘26, Jones Crumpton ‘26, and Rinn Sullivan ‘26 to seal the match by the time the American games ended.
Varsity Basketball
Our basketball teams kicked off their Hall of Champions games this week against Antioch High School on Tuesday. The JV team trailed early in the game before settling in, but couldn’t close the gap on the scoreboard and ultimately fell 34-49. The girls' team competed well against Antioch in its first game of the season and swapped the lead several times throughout the game. Antioch made some late baskets and converted their free throw attempts to pull away for the 52-48 win. The boys' team started its season with a win after a slow start. While baskets were hard to find in the first half, the Tigers picked up the intensity and played with urgency in the third quarter to close a 15-point deficit. They continued to play hard in the fourth quarter, sealing the game by maintaining possession and the lead for a 57-49 opening-game win.
Football The high school football season came to an end recently in Jackson. The co-op team with Donelson Christian Academy lost 7-42 on the road at University School of Jackson. Eli Whelan ’28 made four tackles in the game and also had a reception for 9 yards. The team finished with an overall record of 7-5 on the year.
Varsity Cross Country
For the first time ever, the Tennessee state championships were held in Memphis, but some things remain the same - the USN Tigers near the front of the field.
The short version: the boys, led by All-State performances from Jack Fruin’27 and Griffin Davidson ’27 and bolstered by more depth than any other team, finished as State Runners-Up! For the girls, Madeleine Wiseman ’27 was also All-State, and Jackie Seale ’27 ran well despite recent illness.
The boys were the first to toe the line, and despite a season of setbacks and obstacles, they were resolute and optimistic. With five of the fifteen competing teams each having a chance for the top spot, the race was wide open, and all the top teams had a few runners near the front - Jack and Griffin would both finish in the top 10. But it was USN’s depth - led by Drew Zwerner ’28 gamely competing despite respiratory illness - that made the difference. Caleb Freifeld ’28, Caleb Little ’28, and James Little ’28 all moved up multiple places in the second half to secure a narrow three-point margin over third place. Mario Tedeschi ’26 also finished in the top half of the field in his final HS race.
Madeleine was well-positioned inside the top 10 all race, and despite being stuck between a lack of runners ahead and behind, managed her efforts well and, even in isolation, ran a great race. Jackie was tucked into a large pack of runners from the top schools and did a wonderful job competing with them, culminating in a strong finish.
Varsity Swimming The swim team competed in the Ensworth Invitational and the Oakland Meet last month, where they had several personal best times, including Oliver Burnette ‘29, Rose Theobald ‘29, Fair Wellons ‘27, Krish Nachnani ‘28, and Jackie Seale ‘27, along with new region cuts from Martha Gray Sasser ‘27 and Jackie Seale on Thursday.
Middle School Frisbee
The MS Varsity Boys Frisbee team beat MBA 10-9 at the River Campus on Tuesday, November 18.
The game started windy, MBA was much taller, and the boys fell behind 7-4. At that point, USN ratcheted up its defensive pressure and scored three in a row to tie the game on a layout catch by Brooks Lukach ’31. The teams traded points to 9-9, which was “universe point” — next point wins. After a few turnovers, Andrew Mixon ’30 sent a backhand deep for Ike Tift ’30, who jumped high over his defender to bring down the winning goal.
The season ends Friday. Weather permitting, the boys' and girls' teams will each have one last game this week.
Middle School Soccer With a 2-1 win against Ensworth Middle School, the 6th Grade Boys Soccer team secured the HVAC Jr. Championship! They have played hard all season, and this championship is a product of all the long hours the players & coaches have put in over the past few months. Way to go, Tigers!
